Why You Shouldn’t Put off Your Hopes & Dreams

I have this idea for a novel. I’ve had this idea for a year. I thought it was a newer idea (think November 2018) but it seems I started writing this novel earlier than that (April 2018). And even though collectively I have around 600 words between my April writing and November writing, I haven’t really worked on it for any significant period of time.

The year has passed and I can’t tell you what I spent most of it doing (other than this blog or my actual job). Writing a little bit every day, say 200 words, would have yielded me 73,00 words in one year. So why did I put this idea on a shelf only to occasionally take it down and say, “Oh, that’s nice?”

Sure, some of it comes down to not enough belief in myself that I can actually write a longer piece, like a novel, but I think mostly it’s because of the habit of one day. “One day I’ll do it,” I promise myself. But when exactly is one day?

One day, tomorrow, when xyz happens – all of that equals never. One day is a fairy tale; tomorrow never comes; XYZ might never happen. You’re never gonna do it if you don’t set some sort of date or schedule to get it done.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t the first time you’re hearing this or some version of “the time is going to pass anyway” advice. And I’m sure the truth of it slaps you in the face each time you hear or read it.

We let procrastination or our own limiting beliefs stop us from making our hopes and dreams a reality. We let time pass and before we know it 5 years, 10 years, 20 years have gone by and we are still talking about that “one day.”

Listen, I don’t know you’re situation. Maybe there is something going on in your life that is preventing you from starting. What I do know is that, even when life is giving you garlic breath, you can still sit down and put a plan in place for reaching your goals and dreams. We get this one life and if we are not living fully we will wake up one day with the regrets of not achieving our goals and/or dreams.

This week’s featured song is “I Lived” by OneRepublic. It’s a song that reminds us to fully live.
