Slowing Down as a Form of Self-Care

I don’t know what to write about this week. I have many options but trying to form a cohesive thought about any of them seems too tedious. Instead, I think I’ll write about remaining calm in uncertain moments.

I’m not panicking about COVID-19. I’m taking the responsible measures to protect myself (i.e. washing hands, using hand sanitizer if soap and water aren’t an option, trying my hardest not to touch my face). But I do think I have the appropriate amount of worry: what if I actually do need toilet paper next week and there is none because people have lost their damn minds with panic. Or what if I do my normal grocery shopping next week and some of the things I need/want to get are all sold out because people don’t know how to be generous and only take what they need.

We should take this virus seriously, but we should also all take a collective deep breath in and remember this too shall pass.

People have said that this is a time to slow down, that self-isolation will allow us to dig deeper into who we are. I don’t have that luxury. In fact, I’ve picked up more hours at work because my job/company provides a service that people need in this time of uncertainty.

So each day I need to remind myself that everything is going to be okay. Each day I need to remind myself to take it one day at a time. In addition to everything going on in the world, we all have things happening in our personal lives that can create a myriad of feelings and we need to hold onto the things that ground us. Slowing down and remembering to breathe is a form of self-care too.

Here are some other things you can do to settle the worried mind:

Meditate
Yoga
Go for a walk
Decide on a course of action for you and your family instead of ruminating and waiting for something to happen
Listen to calming music
Read a good book
Talk to a friend
Ask for help
Remember to breathe
